Subject: Interest in a fingerd for Winsock? [was Re: finger server]
Tony:
A while back, I wrote a small finger server with a Visual Basic VBX;
I'm not all too sure if I can distribute the VBX without bringing on
the wrath of its author. I'll check and see...
Now, more importantly, are there a lot of people interested in this
kinda thing? Mine displays two things, either or both of which can be
turned on and off independent of the other:
+ a file of your choice (i.e., a signature file, or a header file, or
something else that you want standardized)
+ a list of current visible processes running on your machine
Here's an example, which I just ran to check out my own machine:
$ finger @fajita.schapiro.dorm.columbia.edu

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
[Current visible tasks on machine:]
Jason's Terminal of Life
emacs @ namaste
Sequoia FingerD
Sequoia/FingerD
Trumpet Winsock
X-Win
The first four lines (from "Jason Levine" through "NY NY USA 10025")
are a file; below the "<><><>" line is the list of tasks. As I said,
either or both can be turned off; turning both off just allows people
to finger your machine without it hanging, although they will get a
blank response.
As I said, lemme know if you all are interested, and I'll check out
the whole distribution thing. I'd LOVE people to test it out, though,
so I'll try to get it into distributable form ASAP!
Thanks a lot, and look forward to hearing from you...
Jason

Subject: Problems with WSArchie
Does anyone else experience the problem where WSArchie looses the path to
WSARCHIE.INI ? I have copied the INI file to both the root and the Windows
directories, and it still happens once in a while.

Only to run WMosaic32 you don't need NT, you can do it with
your Windows 3.1: you will need the win32s (Win32s115.Zip)
update from Microsoft (ftp.microsoft.com). So, you can use
your Trumpet further.

Subject: Current version of Trumpet Newsreader?
Subject says it all. I've got 1.0A. If there's a newer version, where can I
get it? Thanks.

I'm not sure if this is what you have in mind. But my copy of mosaic
uses the telnet program that comes with chameleon sampler. It works
fine as far as mosaic is concerned. The sampler is available as part
the Windows Internet Tour Guide.

Subject: Newbie winsock programmer seeks compiler
I want to port an existing sockets application to Windows/Winsock. I'm
an experienced DOS/Unix C programmer, and am moderately au fait with
sockets, but am new to Windows programming.
What compiler would the panel recommend that I buy which:
a) is cheap
b) is cheap
c) can support Winsock
d) is cheap
e) has some kind of natty application template builder wizard sort of thing,
to ease the pain of writing a snazzy GUI type interface to the app
f) is cheap
g) works reasonably fast and doesn't need 100MB of disk space
h) is cheap
i) doesn't really need zillions of C++ class libraries, because I don't
anticipate having to write code which needs them in the near future
Thanks,
Nick Leverton

Subject: Looking for Shareware PC-NFS ..
Hi all.
I'm looking for some sort of PC nfs client to connect my dos box to my
linux box.
I have ncsa telnet and have just installed winsock.dll with WFW 3.11.
I have it working with telw ftpw etc.
I'm using ne2000 compatible cards and I'd like some method of
connecting both machines together, using one as a fileserver,
mainly because I don't have a monitor for it :(..
All I need now is some way to mount stuff from the linux box.
Linux has a pcnfs deamon which I assume is conpatible with sun's PC-NFS
Thanks for any help anyone can give me.
